Our Philosophy… Living sustainably

ETU MOANA CONTINUOUSLY TRIES TO ACHIEVE THE VERY BEST RESULTS FOR ECOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY.

We feel deeply attached to this place and its people. This strong bond creates a strong responsibility. We respect the priceless beauty of nature, the need of the people who live here and the desires of our guests who come here. As a sustainable resort we are aware of the possible negative effects that our resort could have on the environment and on the community and feel obligated to minimize our environmental footprint by appropriate management.

FOR THIS REASON, ETU MOANA HAS COMMITTED ITSELF TO BEING A COOK ISLANDS ECO RESORT.

ARCHITECTURE

The arrangement of the villas with the natural Polynesian roofs were constructed to remain in keeping with Aitutaki. They are nestled gently into the surrounding landscape. The exterior and interior materials are from mainly renewable resources. The wooden furniture reflects simplicity. Thanks to the construction of the villas with high ceilings and cross ventilation, the air conditioner requirements are low.

PROGRESS MERGED WITH TRADITION

Etu Moana is one of the very few resorts on Aitutaki that makes use of the natural coconut palms "Nikau“ for roofing. Just one of the ways in which Etu Moana is putting something back into the community of which it is a part of. We buy the Nikau by piece from the local schools, which provides them with income and ensures that some traditions are kept alive. We then employ local tradesmen to thatch the Villas with the Nikau. Each Villa takes approximately 3 days and each roof has to be renewed every 3 to 4 years.

We deliberately focus our attention on employing local staff. All our uniforms as well as our pillow and bedcovers are handmade on Aitutaki. We support the development of local fossil free business. This way we follow in the footsteps of the pioneers of Okeanos.

ENERGY, WATER AND WASTE

For us the only reasonable approach to enter a new sustainable tomorrow is to be as fossil free as possible.

Solar energy currently heats up all of our water and we are planning to develop the use of solar panels to supply power for the resort. All of our light bulbs have been replaced by warm light LED’s reducing the energy consumption.

The pristine, healthy Aitutaki rain water is collected and purified at the resort. You will taste the high quality drinking water that is provided in each villa.  The Aitutaki rain water is nature’s present to all of us! The efficient use of this precious water is self-evident.

By using as little packing material as possible we contribute to reduce our waste production. For your breakfast the yoghurt is freshly made at the resort and jams are served using individual, reusable ramekins. Glass bottles are used whenever possible.

OUR LOCAL STAFF

Our staff are the key to the success of Etu Moana. We would not exist without them. It is their authentic dedication and pride that form the heart and soul of Etu Moana. You can sense this throughout the resort. A respectful relationship with our staff is principal to our business strategy.

THE ENDEAVOR OF AN ECO RESORT
demands physical and mental strengths and everybody’s commitment. We hope that our efforts towards sustainability will create more awareness on the island.
