"The average gives the world its substance, the exceptional its value."   (Oscar Wilde)

Kia Orana,

All of us here at Etu Moana are hoping that whatever season you are currently in, it is beautiful. We hope that you will soon be or have already enjoyed a wonderful vacation to an exotic paradise where you can truly relax. If not, it’s time to book and you can find our specials at the end of this Newsletter.

Continuous Improvement
Newform Showers

Following the first part of our refurbishment project in January of this year, we have been installing our Italian designed and made Newform showers throughout the resort. The showers offer a sleek, designer look with a champagne finish that blends effortlessly into the surrounding foliage. They are currently installed in Villas 1,4,5,7,8 and by the pool. The showers installed in the villas now offer hot water too.We were lucky enough to be mentioned on the Newform website – the pictures and article are available here: http://www.newform.it/it/reference/etu-moana

We decided it was time to replace the signature sunloungers on our beach. After sanding and varnishing the others for about 14 years, it was definitely time for an upgrade. Now you can relax, with your drink on the tray and watch the mesmerizing sunset in even more comfort.

A new Welcome

Paul has also been busy replacing all of the Thresholds on the villas to give you an extra welcome when you arrive at Etu Moana – Kia Orana – may you have a long and fulfilling life!

Commitment to the Community

Mana Tiaki
We have recently joined the Mana Tiaki or ‘Protect a Little Paradise’ program here at Etu Moana and are ambassadors here on Aitutaki. Mana Tiaki in Cook Islands Maori means ‘Guardianship or Caretaking’. One of the central pillars of the Kia Orana Values campaign is taking care of our natural environment. The Mana Tiaki Program gives visitors to the Cook Islands an opportunity to contribute back to the Islands and support conservation efforts throughout the country by way of a donation. Increasingly, tourists are becoming aware of their impact on the places that they visit. Mana Tiaki allows them to contribute back to NGO’s which are concentrating on 5 key areas:

- Youth- Eco-Sustainable Development
- Waste Management
- Biodiversity
- Climate Change

More information on the Mana Tiaki program and the Kia Orana Values can be found here: http://www.kiaorana.cookislands.travel

If you have some small (or large) change when you come to check out then please drop it in the donation box that can be found at reception.

Te Maeva Nui – Constitution Celebrations
Preparations are well underway for this year’s Te Maeva Nui. Eleven days of celebration in Rarotonga over constitution weekend (4th-6th August). Te Maeva Nui is an annual National Event and commemorates the rich Cook Islands cultural heritage. It is also a time when Cook Island people reflect upon the journey the pioneering leaders took to attain the right to self-governance. The days will be packed with cultural festivities and celebrations through the arts, crafts, music, song, dance and local food. The whole Nation literally comes to a standstill as the celebrations take place.

This year, all celebrations will be in Rarotonga – over 70 people have or are traveling over from Atitutaki to take part in this spectacle. Terangi and Alone, who you will know from breakfast, are taking part in the festivities this year and will be representing Etu Moana during the celebrations.

Staff – New Arrivals

All of us here at Etu Moana are super excited that we have a new member of the family. Vili (who works on grounds & maintenance) and his wife Judy (who works in Housekeeping) had their first baby boy – Tikiko Korocawiri Samuel Sucuinawaqa. Born on the 12th July. Both Mother and Baby are doing well and all of us can’t wait to meet him when they return from Rarotonga next week. We promise to send you a photo in the next newsletter. We have two other additions to our Etu Moana family. Mitieli Waqa who has started in housekeeping and at breakfast. In a couple of weeks we will also be re-starting cocktail hour on Fridays. Miti is keen to meet everyone and share his mixology skills!Sjharna Raveora is now working alongside Ruanoo in the office and will be there to greet you with a beautiful Cook Islands Smile at the airport when you arrive.

All staff recently completed the Kia Orana Service course level 2 so we are all well prepared for your arrival and cannot wait to welcome you here to Etu Moana and Aitutaki with our new and improved skills. Kia Orana!

Aitutaki Marathon – Pursuit in Paradise!

What an EVENT! The marathon was a huge success and we are already receiving enquiries for next year. We had 6 runners who stayed at Etu Moana in total :-Peter ran the marathon. His wife, Patricia ran the 10K.Lucas & Nathalie ran the 10K – Lucas came in 1st.Emanuela & Ivan ran the half marathon.

50 runners registered and ran on the day and it was with great pride that we cheered home Kelly Pick who is a Cook Islander to an overall victory in the full Marathon.

Paul rode the lead bike and kept Kelly company for the entire race. Kirsti & Ruanoo worked on the Aid stations and made sure the runners were well hydrated and taken care of.

We also had Brent Weigner who holds the world record for the most amounts of marathons run in different countries at the ripe age of 68 – pretty impressive.

The event was amazing and everyone came home safe, albeit a bit hot and tired but good job they were on Aitutaki where relaxation in our little paradise is a given. Roll on next year!

Motu2Motu – Another Great Aitutaki Event!

Yes, ladies and gentlemen we are coming up fast to that time of year again. Vaka Eiva and Motu2Motu. The Cook Islands Outrigger Canoe yearly events. Vaka Eiva is celebrating 15 years this year so will be sure to attract some top notch teams to battle it out in some of Rarotonga’s best conditions. Motu2Motu will be the week after around the beautiful lagoon of Aitutaki.

The event in Aitutaki this year will not only feature the usual 36KM changeover race on Tuesday 4th December, but there will also be 12KM iron races on Monday 3rd December. These will be men’s or women’s teams only but a good opportunity to bring your team and compete with the local paddlers before the epic even on the Tuesday. Registrations are open now and Etu Moana is running a paddlers and spectators special for stays over those dates. See below for details.

Continuous ambition: Sustainable Tourism

We’re completing another round of Nikau on the Villa roofs. As you all know, we use natural palm leaves to decorate our villas and are one of the last remaining resorts on Aitutaki to do so. Progress has been a little slower than we would like this year but availability of the leaves and villas has meant that we are further behind schedule than we would like. However, everyone agrees that it is worth the wait as it most certainly looks beautiful when it is complete.

Be Good to yourself and the Reef Too…
We’d advise you check your mosquito repellent before you arrive and make sure it is as healthy for you as it should be. Natural products these days are just as effective as Deet and are well worth looking into. Lemongrass and Citronella are great alternatives. Just a reminder to check your sunscreen before you arrive to make sure it is oxybenzone free to help protect yourself and the future of Aitutaki’s Reef and Lagoon.

Tripadvisor - Still at the top:
Yes, we are still number 1 and that is all thanks to you taking the time to write your lovely reviews. We welcome them all and all of us are extremely proud that we have managed to remain in the Number 1 slot. If you have any suggestions on how we can improve Etu Moana in any way then please do let us know. Meitaki Atupaka!
