NEWS FROM ETU MOANA
Well done and congratulations to US!! Etu Moana was nominated for one of the A1 Meitaki Awards today from the Cook Islands Tourism Corporation for excellent customer service. All of us here at Etu Moana are extremely pleased to of been honoured with this accolade. Jolene, who works on Breakfast at Etu Moana accepted the award for us. Meitaki Atupaka to all of our staff for achieving this award.
Commitment to the Community
This year so far, our contribution to the community has focused on welfare and sports events. We made a donation towards child welfare during their annual ‘Baby Show’. All funds received will go towards Child Welfare here on Aitutaki. We also contributed towards the Amuri fishing competition as we are located in Amuri and the Youth Aitutaki Sailing Regatta that was held here in Aitutaki.
The sailing regatta is open to youths from the Cook Islands and concentrates on encouraging them to compete in open competition on the beautiful lagoon of Aitutaki. The competitors from Rarotonga flew over and everyone stayed on the beautiful Motu of EE for the duration. Ted Tavai is our local, award winning coach here on the island. Some of you may have met him during your stay if you took a trip around the lagoon with him on his Hobie Cat.
Our little island of Aitutaki did really well – 6 of our sailors competed and we managed 2nd and 3rd places in both the Green and Gold Fleet Championships.
Green Fleet Winners were:-1st Griffin Wittwer (Rarotonga), 2nd Dominic Munokoa (Aitutaki), 3rd Marama Rio (Aitutaki).
Gold Fleet Winners were:1st Kohl Horton (Rarotonga), 2nd Shaquille Munakoa (Aitutaki), 3rd Terii Haurua (Aitutaki).
Well done to all who competed – the winds were strong, the sails were reefed but everyone had a great time!
New Lobby Furniture
It was time to upgrade the furniture in our Lobby. We hope that we have managed to create a more welcoming and less cluttered space with our new Rattan sofas and chairs. We have also added some tables made from the wood of coconut trees which is definitely in keeping with our environment here in the Cook Islands.
We have replaced some of the Fridge Freezers in the villas to be more in keeping with our environmental philosophy. They are smaller and more appropriate for short term use, but the Freezer compartment is still large enough for a few days of supplies. We hope you like them!
We are just coming out of the dry season now and our gardens will soon be full of flowers for summer again. Our night blooming jasmine is creating a beautiful scent around the reception area at night. You can ask us where to find it! The ironwood tree on the beach has recently been trimmed ready for its growth burst back into a beautiful shade tree in summer.
Motu2Motu and Vaka Eiva
It’s that time again already. After competing successfully last year, Paul and Kirsti will compete again in Aitutaki’s premier event – the seven leg Outrigger Canoe race around the beautiful lagoon of Aitutaki. Etu Moana is almost full of paddlers taking part in the event on the 5th December 2017 but do take advantage of our 15% off November and December Special and come and cheer us on! If you are in Rarotonga prior to arriving here over the dates 24th November to the 1st December be sure to catch some of the Vaka Eiva racing action on Rarotonga. Vaka Eiva is one of the Cook Islands largest events and attracts paddling teams from all over the world. It is highly contested and a great cultural experience.
Aitutaki Marathon – Pursuit in Paradise!
Yes! That’s right, the first ever Marathon in the Cook Islands is going to be held right here on Aitutaki. The inaugural marathon will take place on Tuesday 1st May 2018. During the same week there will also be a 5km fun run and a Star Wars themed Hash Harriers run on 4th May.
All three marathon disciplines start and finish at Ootu Point, our stunning white sand beach at the gateway to Aitutaki Lagoon.
The race is on a combination of Bitumen and coral roads, with an average elevation of 20 meters and maximum of 83 meters, an average slope of 1.6% or -1.5% and maximum of 14.4% and -11.4%.
Running conditions are expected to be great with typical temperatures at that time of year being in the low 20’s (Celsius) at 6am when the race starts, rising to a high of possibly 25C. Average humidity is likely to be less than 50%. So get your running shoes on and book in with us so you can relax in luxury after the big event. Just Do it!
Sssshhh – we’re remodeling!
So you’re the first to know. Etu Moana has been performing well for 12 years now and having the place built so beautifully and thoughtfully in the first place has ensured high standards and longevity in the structures and the fixtures and fittings. However, after 12 years, we’ve listened to your comments and decided that it is time to do some remodeling of the bathrooms. This will happen early next year and is planned for January 14th to February 11th.
During this time the resort will be closed in order to get the work done efficiently and with no disturbance to you, our guests who come here to relax. No details will be published as yet – but be sure to stay tuned to our social media during this time where we will keep you informed of what is happening by regular updates from here along with the finished product.
Continuous ambition: Sustainable Tourism
No Straws Please!
Plastic straws are the new pariah in the new world of Hotel and Catering. Given that they can take up to 20 years to degrade. Just to put it into perspective – it is estimated that in America alone 500 Million single use plastic straws are used every day! We have decided to do our bit and cut out our single use plastic straws. We are now using re-useable stainless steel straws for our arrival coconuts and paper straws for our bar so you can ‘drink up’ without impacting the environment.
Be Good to yourself and the Reef Too…
Just a reminder to check your sunscreen before you arrive to make sure it is oxybenzone free to help protect yourself and the future of Aitutaki’s Reef and Lagoon.
Tripadvisor - Still at the top:
We wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t for all of you so Meitaki Atupaka for your time and your lovely comments. As far as you, our guests are concerned we seem to be doing well with our service, breakfast and everyone’s favourite the honesty bar. If you have any suggestions on how we can improve Etu Moana in any way then please do let us know. We are always open to new ideas on how we can improve our product for future guests and going forward.
