The colors and sites of the lagoon are simply indescribable. No pictures do it justice. From the crystal clear turquoise waters to the white sand bars and the uninhabited tiny little islands you will feel there is no world outside the protection of the reef. The Aitutaki lagoon is known as one of the most magnificent in the Pacific and one of the largest in the world (19.4 square miles). A true paradise for swimmers, snorkelers, scuba divers and fishermen. The outer reef abounds with a marine life and towards the end of the year (October till December) the great whales come to play. The huge protected lagoon provides perfect conditions for kite-surfers, catamaran and dinghy sailors and paddlers. Home of international sailing competitions and ever growing Kit-Surfing Community, Aitutaki lagoon competes yearly for the world title. The annual watersport highlight is of course the "MOTU 2 MOTU" race in December which brings together outrigger canoe paddlers from all over the Pacific.
